Q. My sister and her 4 year old daughter live with me. The child has synovial sarcoma. She has one more round of chemo to go. During the last hospital stay the nurses and doctors never asked her if she was in pain and they forgot to send the intravenous fluids and medication to our home when they discharged her. This week we brought her back because she was bleeding from the rectum; the doctor ordered a blood transfusion but the nurses forgot to order the blood from the blood bank. Last week had her CBC and both red and white counts were down. The Dr. told the mom that the kid needed a blood transfusion this was before 4 P.M. At 7 P.M., it still didn’t happen. The nurses said they forgot to order the blood and gave no apologies, as if it didn’t matter. They are so rude and we are afraid of them because when the mother told them she wanted to take her child somewhere else they threatened to call the child protective services and accuse her of child abuse. We don’t know what to do anymore. We are trying to save this child’s life and we are terrified that she won’t make it because of all the careless mistakes.
A. I am sorry to learn that you and your family are having so much difficulty. The mistakes that you speak of are indeed terrible and there is no excuse for them. First, the child’s mother needs to file a complaint against the hospital personnel who blackmailed the her to get her to change her mind about transferring her child to a better place. That was a criminal act. She should consult with an attorney.
Second, the child’s mother can also file a complaint with the state department of health stating all of the facts. You will have to find their website and find their complaint hotline number. They will assign a case number and start an investigation.
Third, I recommend that the mother immediately ask to have a conference with the physician and hospital administration to address these complaints. If the doctor does not respond immediately then she should find another pediatric oncologist in the area who is on staff at another hospital and make an appointment. The child’s mother needs to take immediate action.
